Operacja Konieczna
Roman Cieslewicz
French, born Poland. 1930–1996
1956
An offset-lithograph film poster in which Roman Cieslewicz advertises the Soviet film Operacja Konieczna by merging a simplified surgeon’s silhouette with a photographic strip of eyes to suggest urgency and human drama.
What strikes you is the dramatic play of negative space: a flat, gloved outline in black and beige frames a razor-cut photograph of intense, furrowed eyes, while the lowercase red title anchors the composition.
By fusing photomontage with reductive silhouette and typographic restraint, Cieslewicz helped shift poster design toward a conceptual, psychological language that influenced the Polish poster school and postwar European graphic design.
