Untitled (self-portrait in the studio)
Constantin Brâncuși
Romanian and French, born Romania. 1876–1957
1920-22
A gelatin silver self-portrait photograph showing the sculptor seated among blocks of stone and tools, intended to present the artist as maker and to connect the photographic image to his sculptural practice.
You first register a study of textures and mass—the pale shirt and bucket hat against rough marble, the dark, worn tools and wooden crates—while the seated figure’s inward, contemplative pose lends the scene a calm, workworn stillness.
By staging himself in the studio amid raw materials and instruments, the artist foregrounds process and the workspace as subjects, helping to make the maker’s identity and practice a central concern of modern art.
