Poster Celebrating 10th Anniversary of "Tategumi Yokogumi" Magazine
Koichi Sato
Japanese, born 1944
1993
An offset-lithograph poster by Koichi Sato made for the tenth anniversary of Tategumi Yokogumi magazine that uses intersecting, translucent bands of color to celebrate the publication’s kinetic, layered identity.
A deep black field is sliced by neon-like diagonal ribbons that cross, overlap and blend into new hues, while narrow columns of Japanese characters at the edges anchor the composition and set up a vibrating visual rhythm.
Fusing precise color registration with typographic framing, this 1990s design shows how commercial postermaking became a site for experimental, painterly effects in Japanese graphic design, expanding how printed matter could convey motion and light.
