The Location of Six Geometric Figures (Circle, Square, Triangle, Rectangle, Parallelogram and Trapezoid)
Sol LeWitt
American, 1928–2007
1975
A portfolio of six etchings in which Sol LeWitt marks the locations of basic geometric figures to make the idea and its precise instruction the subject of the work.
You first notice a large, almost uniform dark field—here a deep, matte black—punctuated only by a small pale tab at the top edge, so the piece reads as a quiet void interrupted by a minimal human trace.
This work exemplifies LeWitt’s conceptual method—reducing art to systems and instructions—and helped shift art’s focus from individual execution to idea, influencing minimalism and later conceptual practices.
