Transchromies
Carlos Cruz-Diez
Venezuelan, 1923–2019
1965
A 1965 portfolio of five screenprints by Carlos Cruz-Diez that stages pure color as a changing perceptual phenomenon rather than as an illustration of form.
You first notice a bold horizontal division—a saturated red field beneath a pale cream area—punctuated by crisp sans-serif text ('cruz-diez / transchromies') and a slim vertical notch that makes the flat colors feel active and tactile.
An example of Cruz-Diez’s pioneering kinetic/optical practice, this work helped shift art’s focus onto color as an autonomous, dynamic event and influenced later experiments in perception and color systems.
