Untitled from Floating Islands
Eric Fischl
American, born 1948
1985
An aquatint-and-drypoint print by Eric Fischl that stages two nude figures in a charged, ambiguous encounter, using painterly marks and saturated color to probe intimacy and tension.
A narrow composition slices a hot yellow field on the left—where a small, back-turned nude in a green hat walks away—against a larger right-side dominated by a reclining, fleshy figure rendered in earthy browns, turquoise wash, and aggressive black strokes that feel raw and immediate.
Made in 1985, this work brings Fischl’s 1980s preoccupation with suburban eroticism and psychological narrative into the print medium, expanding printmaking’s capacity for gestural, painterly drama and unsettling storytelling.
