Salon des Cent - Exposition of Original Drawings and Posters, November 9 - December 1896
Armand M. Rassenfosse
French, 1862–1934
1896
A bright orange lithographic poster in which the artist entices passersby to the Salon des Cent exhibition, using a sensuous, mythlike nude holding a tiny seated figure to advertise original drawings and prints.
What strikes you first is the bold, even orange ground framed by deep black type, with a softly modeled reclining nude whose flowing contours and delicate hatchwork draw the eye to the small puppet‑like figure she studies with a hand mirror.
This work captures how late‑19th‑century lithography and poster design brought Art Nouveau imagery and modern graphic typography into public life, helping to make exhibitions and avant‑garde art part of everyday urban culture.
