Sculpture Studies
Dimitri Hadzi
American, 1921–2006
1961
An engraving on paper in which Dimitri Hadzi experiments with small, biomorphic sculptural ideas, using etched line to suggest mass, balance, and the logic of three‑dimensional form.
You notice an array of totemic, mushroom‑ and figure‑like silhouettes etched across the plate, their curved planes built from rhythmic hatching that turns flat surface into tactile, volumetric suggestion.
Made during mid‑century abstraction, these print studies reveal how sculptors used drawing and printmaking as experimental laboratories to reduce, rotate, and reimagine forms before committing them to full‑scale public sculpture.
