Robert Rauschenberg
American, 1925–2008
1984
A photoetching and lithograph in which Robert Rauschenberg layers photographic fragments of textiles, patterned panels, and carved ornament to create a collage-like field that collapses found imagery and painterly composition.
You notice translucent planes of checkerboard and striped cloth overlapping like windows, their differing textures—soft folds, woven lines, and delicate carved relief—held together by a thin black rectangle that makes the whole feel like a revealed study of surfaces.
This work continues Rauschenberg’s ‘combine’ impulse, using photographic and printmaking techniques to bring everyday materials into fine art and to blur the boundaries between painting, photography, and object, expanding what printmaking could be.
