Hreppholar I from Hreppholar I-VIII
Richard Serra
American, 1938–2024
1991
An etching in which Richard Serra reduces a massive, irregular black form to a single, sculptural presence on the paper.
You first notice a dense, textured black mass with ragged, torn edges pressing against a pale ground, its suggestion of weight and scale feeling palpably sculptural despite the flat sheet.
The work shows Serra translating the material and monumental concerns of his steel sculptures into print, blurring the line between sculpture and printmaking and expanding how mass and surface can be represented on paper.
