The Museum of Modern Art, Wrapped (Rear), Project for New York from the portfolio (Some) Not Realized Projects
Christo
American, born Bulgaria. 1935–2020
(April 9 and July 19, 1971)
A lithograph with photograph collage by Christo that sketches and documents a proposal to wrap the rear of the Museum of Modern Art, imagining the building transformed into a draped, fabric-covered volume.
A dense web of agitated graphite strokes turns façades into dripping, textured masses, while a small street map and a black-and-white documentary photo pasted along the bottom anchor the imagined intervention to a specific urban site.
One of Christo’s planning sheets for his large-scale, temporary “wrapping” projects, this work both records an ephemeral proposal and helped broaden how artists could alter and reframe familiar public architecture.
