Kunst nach Wirklichkeit, Ein neuer Realismus in Amerika und in Europa
Helmut Schmidt-Rhen
German, born 1936
1978
An offset-lithograph exhibition poster that overlays bold German type on a photographed café window to advertise a show about “new realism,” deliberately blurring printed message and lived urban imagery.
At first glance heavy, cut-out headline letters hover over a ghosted café interior—neon red signage, curtains and reflected street life bleeding through the typography to create a layered, mirror-like depth.
It demonstrates late-1970s design thinking that collapses text and image to question photographic reproduction and urban perception, bringing New Realism’s concerns into the everyday medium of the poster.
