One of the ten lithographs from Jasper Johns’s 0–9 portfolio, this lithograph uses muted ink and delicate plate tone to turn a familiar numeral into a quiet, tactile study of surface and perception.
At first glance you notice a warm, wood‑grain–like field of mottled beige and fine, rain‑like flecks with a soft, blurred area near the lower left that resists immediate reading, pulling you to search for a hidden sign.
Johns transformed ordinary signs into near‑abstractions, shifting attention from representation to surface and process and helping to open postwar art toward Minimalism, conceptualism, and new approaches to printmaking.
