Robert Rauschenberg
American, 1925–2008
1999
A photolithograph by Robert Rauschenberg that layers photographic fragments, a dissolving American flag, and inky washes to unsettle national symbols and personal memory.
You first notice a ghostly, half-erased flag breaking into splattered ink, with a solitary, pensive man crouched within the blots, all floating in a broad field of white.
Typical of Rauschenberg’s late practice, it fuses photography and painterly gesture to appropriate and question mass imagery, expanding printmaking’s capacity for associative and politically charged expression.
