Untitled
Maryan S. Maryan (Pinchas Burstein)
American, born Poland. 1927–1977
1967
This 1967 lithograph by Maryan S. Maryan shows a contorted, seated figure—bandaged, tattooed, and mid-gesture—through which the artist attempts to externalize bodily trauma and psychic survival.
A stark black field throws the figure into relief: bold, brushy lines, striped limbs, stippled flesh and a carved chair combine so the body reads like an urgent, ritualized performance frozen in mid-cry.
Rooted in postwar expressionism and the artist’s own experiences, this print helped broaden American printmaking’s capacity to convey psychological intensity and to make survivor memory visible in modern art.
