Victor Vasarely
French, born Hungary. 1908–1997
1956-60
An oil-on-canvas optical abstraction by Victor Vasarely that arranges stark geometric shapes and measured black-and-gray passages to make the flat surface seem to bulge, sink, and vibrate.
At first glance a dense black disk and overlapping pale ovals hover above a field of precise horizontal stripes that bend into a bowl‑like distortion, the strict geometry and high contrast turning static forms into a tense illusion of depth and motion.
Made in the 1950s–60s, this work exemplifies Vasarely’s role in codifying Op art—using systematic form and contrast as perceptual experiments that reshaped midcentury painting and influenced design and kinetic practices.
