Grove Group I
Brice Marden
American, 1938–2023
1972-73
A large oil-and-wax-on-canvas painting in which Marden reduces painting to a hushed field of color and subtle surface texture.
From a distance it reads as a single soft celadon plane, while close up you notice whispery brush marks, delicate tonal shifts and a thin darker register along the bottom that quietly anchors the float of color.
Part of Marden’s Grove series, it helped steer Minimalist monochrome toward a meditative, materially attentive practice by using wax to veil gesture and make color and surface the primary subject.
