Milkstone

Milkstone

Wolfgang Laib
German, born 1950
1978
A shallow marble and milk work—a polished rectangular stone basin filled with fresh milk so the object becomes a quiet, ritualized surface rather than a conventional sculpture.
From a distance it reads as a pristine white plane set against the wooden floor; up close the thin skin of milk gleams and subtly reflects light, suggesting fragility and presence.
By combining Minimalist form with ephemeral, organic material, Laib transformed sculpture into a meditative ritual that broadened how artists use natural substances and time-based experience in art.
