Bill Viola
American, 1951–2024
1994
A five-channel video installation by Bill Viola that pairs slow-motion color video projections with polished granite slabs to stage ritualized moments of falling, immersion, and rebirth.
In the darkened room tall, luminous screens show single bodies suspended or plunging in liquid, time-stretched motion while black granite panels beneath mirror and fragment the images, creating a haunting, chapel-like stillness.
By translating devotional ritual into expanded, time-based media, Stations helped define immersive video installation as a means to evoke spiritual experience and profound emotional attention in contemporary art.
