Anna Maria Maiolino
Brazilian, born Italy 1942
1985
A sheet of ink and colored-ink studies on paper arranged in a grid, where Anna Maria Maiolino explores simple marks—spirals, ovals, blocks—as a private visual alphabet of repeated gestures.
What strikes you first is the steady rhythm of small rectangles across the page, where dense black strokes, pale blue washes, smudges and many empty outlines pulse between presence and absence.
By paring gesture down to elemental signs and repeating them, Maiolino links intimate, bodily mark-making to conceptual and minimalist practices, turning personal notation into a public vocabulary of memory and form.
