Piccole Note
Anna Maria Maiolino
Brazilian, born Italy 1942
1986
A narrow strip of ink and colored-ink on paper—ten tiny rectangular “notes” in blue and black—in which Maiolino quietly tests variations of wash, mark, and spacing.
Set against a broad white field, a row of postage‑stamp rectangles floats across the page, each containing a different watery blue wash, black blot, or single pencil dot so your eye moves from one subtle variation to the next.
These modest, serial studies condense Maiolino’s interest in repetition and reduction, turning drawing into a form of conceptual notation that records process, memory, and small gestures as meaningful material.
