Sketchbook: El Golea, II
Jean Dubuffet
French, 1901–1985
1948
A small ink drawing executed directly on a printed form, in which Dubuffet reduces a seated figure to quick, looping strokes that favor raw, improvisatory presence over finish.
What strikes you first is the contrast of dark, calligraphic ink against the beige printed text, with a face and hunched body emerging from swift, economical lines that deliberately weave through and ignore the typography beneath.
This sheet reflects Dubuffet’s move toward Art Brut and the reuse of everyday papers, showing how postwar artists embraced rough, untrained gestures and found materials to challenge traditional notions of technique and taste.
