Two handmade paper sheets set in clear plexiglass and linked by a single length of twine, in which Rauschenberg converts the page into a pared-down, sculptural “fuse” that connects image, object, and space.
At first you see two warm, deckled sheets floating in transparent frames; then your eye is drawn to the hairlike twine that emerges between them and trails down the wall, turning still paper into a taut, directional line.
Dating from 1974, this piece extends Rauschenberg’s combines and bookworks by collapsing drawing, object, and installation—making the materiality and temporality of the page visible and precursing later interests in dematerialized and process-based art.
