Untitled
Dirk Bell
German, born 1969
2003
A sensuous hybrid drawing in watercolor, colored pencil, charcoal, and graphite that renders two figures pressed together, the artist attempting to make touch and intimacy visible through blurred, bodily forms.
What strikes you is the smoky, green-blue wash and smudged charcoal that melts two faces into one another, punctuated by fine pencil scratches and an irregular, amoeba‑like paper shape that emphasizes organic closeness.
By fusing painterly wash with raw drawn marks, Bell bridges figuration and abstraction and participates in a contemporary drawing practice that foregrounds corporeal memory and the material presence of gesture.
