Untitled
Laura Owens
American, born 1970
2003
A small, exuberant mixed-media collage by Laura Owens that combines cut-and-pasted painted paper with watercolor, synthetic polymer paint, and colored pencil to assemble a playful, abstract field of dots, blobs, and looping marks exploring color and surface.
You first notice a buoyant scatter of pastel and jewel-toned circles and irregular watercolor washes that float above and around a delicate, ribbon-like web of multicolored lines, giving the sheet a rhythmic, almost musical sense of movement.
Straddling drawing, collage, and painting, this piece exemplifies Owens’s approach of layering craftlike cut paper with painterly gesture to blur genre boundaries and reinvigorate contemporary abstraction with wit and improvisation.
