These days...
Michelle Segre
American, born 1965
2000
A monumental ink-on-paper drawing in which Michelle Segre deploys thousands of precise pen lines to conjure a dense, shifting field of organic forms that registers a moment of contemporary overload.
From afar it reads like a sweeping, abstract map, while up close the eye is arrested by clusters of cellular textures, rocky masses, and filigreed webbing that form a relentless, mesmerizing tapestry of mark-making.
By fusing the aesthetics of scientific illustration, cartography, and obsessive hand drawing, the work helps make visible complex ecological and psychological networks and pushed contemporary drawing toward mapping inner and environmental systems.
