Untitled #485
Peter Sullivan
American, born 1958
2000
A large gouache on paper in which Peter Sullivan lays down quick, calligraphic gestures to record rhythm and movement rather than to depict a specific subject.
A porous white field holds looping, watery strokes in blues, grays, and browns that overlap like musical notation, their edges blooming into soft washes so the marks seem to float and breathe across the sheet.
Part of a late-20th-century revival of drawing and watercolor, the work blurs drawing and painting through gestural abstraction, opening up a delicate, process-driven way of thinking about mark, surface, and time.
