Doug Aitken
American, born 1968
(2005)
A small framed collage of printed paper and pressure-sensitive tape in which Doug Aitken juxtaposes a silhouetted profile with architectural fragments to compress cinematic space into a tactile, fragmented image.
A deep black profile reads like a film still until two vertical bands of patterned tape and a folded, perforated ‘building’ physically slice into the scene, creating an uneasy pause between human presence and urban structure.
By translating filmic and architectural motifs into cut-and-paste collage, the work bridges photography, cinema, and object-making and exemplifies contemporary art’s interest in media hybridity and the fractured experience of modern urban life.
