Alex Katz
American, born 1927
2005
A small black-and-white etching by Alex Katz that reduces a floral scene to bold white contour lines on a square black field, made as a supplementary print for the illustrated book Gloria.
Set low on a wide white sheet, a dense black square confronts you with spare, looping white outlines of petals and leaves, the high contrast giving the flowers a stencil-like, almost cinematic clarity.
By translating his signature flatness and economy of line into etching and the artists’‑book format, Katz extends his painting concerns into serial, reproducible images that bridge painting, printmaking, and graphic design.
