Skandia Cinema, Stockholm, Sweden, Elevation of rear of auditorium
Erik Gunnar Asplund
Swedish, 1885–1940
1923
An ink-on-paper mounted architectural elevation of the rear auditorium for Stockholm’s Skandia cinema, in which Asplund worked out seating tiers, lighting and a restrained decorative scheme to shape an intimate modern theater interior.
The precise, measured ink lines and near-perfect symmetry draw your eye to the low dome, suspended globe lights and a finely detailed cornice that reads like a delicate band of ornament against the otherwise spare section.
This drawing captures Asplund’s moment of transition toward a refined Scandinavian modernism that married classical detail to functional clarity, helping define how 20th‑century cinemas and civic interiors were conceived.
