Untitled from Spirit Cooking
Marina Abramović
Serbian, born 1946
1996
A letterpress print presenting the two small words “fire food” near the top of a large sheet of paper, using spare typography to evoke ritual, appetite, and threat.
The tiny, serifed phrase appears to hover within a wide white field, pulling your eyes up and obliging you to supply meanings and bodily associations between the two words.
Made as part of a 1996 portfolio that transposed performance’s focus on ritual and the body into printed aphorisms, it helped broaden conceptual art’s use of language as a physical, provocative object.
