An artist's book in which Richard Hamilton assembles reproduced documents, collages, stamped marks, gouache and handwriting to interrogate and reframe an art archive.
The black, leather-like cover with restrained gold lettering—THE ARCHIVES—reads like a formal institutional volume, promising a cool, documentary interior where found paperwork is made intimate and unexpectedly altered.
By treating museum files and administrative ephemera as material for collage and commentary, the book helped make the archive itself a central subject of postwar art and advanced the artist's book, appropriation, and institutional critique.
