A boxed portfolio assembled by Mel Bochner that gathers nineteen printed artists’ publications and a brochure—small printed sheets, folded booklets, and reproduced photographs presented together as a single conceptual work about images and distribution.
It reads like an artist’s desk opened for inspection: a shallow box spilling monochrome and color photocopies, accordion folds, tiny pamphlets, a toy bookshelf and black cards with white text, an organized jumble that feels archival and conversational.
By making multiples, pamphlets, and reproduced photographs the artwork itself, Bochner helped shift art’s focus from unique objects to systems of reproduction, language, and circulation—a crucial gesture in Conceptual art that opened up editions, documentation, and artists’ publications as primary media.
