Vase
Daum Frères, Nancy, France
French, established 1875
c. 1900
A hand-painted, sculptured-glass vase in which Daum Frères transforms a utilitarian vessel into a slender, nature-inspired sculpture by stretching a bulbous base into a improbably long, thin neck.
What strikes you first is the improbable silhouette — a pebblelike, weighty base rising into a wafer-thin, reedlike stem, its matte, pitted surface and muted brown‑gray tones reading more like weathered stone than shiny glass.
Dating from around 1900 in Nancy, this work shows how Daum helped elevate glassmaking into the realm of fine art—experimenting with texture, form, and surface to advance Art Nouveau’s fusion of craft and sculpture.
