. . . I Plunged into Solitude. I Dwelt in the Tree behind Me (. . . Je me suis enfoncé dans la solitude. J'habitais l'arbre derrière moi) (plate VIII) from La Tentation de Saint-Antoine
Odilon Redon
French, 1840–1916
1896, published 1938
A moody lithograph by Odilon Redon that translates a passage from Flaubert’s La Tentation de Saint-Antoine into a solitary, almost human-looking hollow tree, printed as part of an illustrated book on chine appliqué.
What strikes first is the deep black cavity carved into the trunk—a negative space like a doorway—set against finely modeled bark and a dim, atmospheric background, the image quietly facing the book’s printed French text.
Part of Redon’s symbolist work, this print helped renew book illustration by using tonal, dreamlike imagery to make inner states visible and anticipating modernist and surrealist approaches to print and image-making.
