Amaryllis and Anemone (Amaryllis und Anemone)
Emil Nolde
German, 1867–1956
(c. 1930)
A watercolor in which Emil Nolde reduces amaryllis and anemone to bold, expressive shapes and saturated color, making the feeling of the flowers more important than botanical detail.
You are first struck by two striped red amaryllis floating against a deep, inky ground while a misty wash of purple and bright yellow blossoms below vibrates with loose, luminous washes.
These intimate flower watercolors show how Nolde and other German Expressionists elevated watercolor into a finished medium of intense color and mood, using simplified forms to make paint itself the vehicle of emotion.
