Standing Female Nude
Elie Nadelman
American, born Poland. 1882–1946
c. 1907–12
An ink-on-paper study in which the artist reduces a standing female nude to a few bold, rhythmic contours to evoke volume, balance, and classical poise.
You're immediately struck by the sparseness: a tall, narrow sheet held together by confident, calligraphic arcs that mark shoulders, hips, and crossed legs while much of the body is suggested by the surrounding empty space.
The drawing exemplifies Nadelman's early-20th-century effort to translate sculptural concerns into a modern, highly economical line, helping to shape a simplified, stylized approach to the human figure in American modernism.
