Vase
Koloman Moser
Austrian, 1868–1918
1902
A small square glass vase in which Koloman Moser pairs a plain geometric cube with a richly treated surface to turn functional glass into a jewel‑like object.
Its softly rounded corners and deep cobalt interior are striking at first glance, while the exterior shimmers with a mottled, pebble‑like pattern of blues and turquoise that seems to change as light moves across it.
Made during the Vienna Secession era, this work shows Moser’s aim to dissolve the line between fine art and applied design, pointing toward modernist ideas of clean form enriched by crafted surface treatment.
