Fabric Sample
Gunta Stölzl
Swiss, born Germany. 1897–1983
c. 1932-66
A narrow handwoven sample strip by Gunta Stölzl that experiments with different weave structures and materials—plastic thread, jute, cotton, and wool—to investigate texture, density, and color in a modern textile.
The piece reads as a vertical sequence of tactile swatches: alternating open, airy weaves and denser dark bands, a surprising thin flash of red near the lower section, and frayed edges that emphasize its workshop-made, experimental character.
Rooted in the Bauhaus weaving workshop, this sample shows Stölzl’s pivotal role in elevating textile craft into modern design practice by testing new materials and patterns that influenced later industrial and contemporary textiles.
