Aline Motta
Brazilian, born 1974
2017–2019
A high-definition color video with sound that observes life and labor on water, using intimate, documentary-style footage to make visible the overlooked social and material foundations of communities built over rivers and lagoons.
A low, frontal viewpoint pulls you into a narrow wooden canoe behind a woman in a bright patterned skirt whose steady paddle, composed posture, and the shimmering reflections of the water foreground a crowded backdrop of stilt houses and other boats, making the scene feel both immediate and communal.
By focusing cinematic attention on everyday work and infrastructure on the water, Motta’s piece expands documentary practice and draws attention to the social, economic, and spatial systems that quietly sustain urban life yet remain largely invisible.
