Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee
Francis Frith
British, 1822–1898
1839-98
An albumen silver print by Francis Frith that records the town of Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, made to document the landscape and antiquities of the Holy Land for Victorian viewers.
A wide, tranquil panorama: a low foreground of grasses and scattered stones leads the eye to a compact cluster of stone buildings and a fortress beside the bright horizontal strip of the lake, all beneath a pale, expansive sky.
An early example of travel and documentary photography, it helped establish the medium’s role in archaeological study, biblical tourism, and the Victorian shaping of distant places for metropolitan audiences.
