Tkanina Polska (Polish Fabric)

An illustrated book whose cover is wrapped in Jacquard-woven fabric, where Abakanowicz translates Polish textile motifs into a tactile, artful object.
At first glance the cover reads as a repeating field of purple, star-like forms set against a warm ochre ground, the dense weave catching light and suggesting a textured, almost sculptural surface.
Early in her career, this work shows Abakanowicz fusing folk weaving and modernist abstraction, helping to elevate textiles from craft to experimental fine art and prefiguring her monumental woven sculptures.
