Page from The Taste of Others
Maurizio Cattelan
Italian, born 1960
2011
A printed page—an offset reproduction from Maurizio Cattelan’s illustrated book—pairing text with an image of his white sculpted hand, L.O.V.E., defiantly raising its middle finger in front of Milan’s stock exchange.
The composed German text above makes the small image feel like evidence: a monumental, weathered white hand dominates the picture plane, its raised middle finger aimed at the glowing arched entrance marked BORSA, creating a jarring mix of civic architecture and crude, theatrical insult.
By turning a site-specific, provocative public sculpture into a circulated print, Cattelan widened the reach of his satirical attack on financial power and helped blur boundaries between monument, prank, and published art as tools of social critique.
