Grasses - Morning
Alfred Stieglitz
American, 1864–1946
1933
A black-and-white gelatin silver photograph in which Stieglitz isolates dew-dotted grasses at dawn to transform an ordinary patch of field into a focused study of light, texture, and mood.
You first notice a carpet of dark, tactile tufts pierced by countless tiny, glittering highlights—deep velvety shadows and bright points of dew making the surface read almost like a constellation or a living textile.
Made late in his career, this work shows Stieglitz’s modernist move to use precise tonal control and close observation to turn humble natural details into near-abstract, emotional 'equivalents,' expanding what photography could express.
