An American Place, O'Keeffe Painting, Reflections
Ansel Adams
American, 1902–1984
c. 1938
A gelatin silver photograph in which Ansel Adams records a framed Georgia O’Keeffe painting, using reflections and nearby books to turn the painted industrial scene into a layered, real-world tableau.
What strikes you is the ghostly overlay—the painting’s smoky chimneys and a radiant, almost celestial sun are pierced by window reflections and the white spines of books, so the painted skyline seems to hover between image and room.
By photographing another artist’s painting in situ, Adams blurs the line between artwork and environment, linking modernist imagery to everyday spaces and showing how photography can reveal the social life and reproduction of art.
