Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, Plan sketches of classroom building
Louis I. Kahn
American, born Estonia. 1901–1974
1963
A charcoal-on-tracing-paper study in which Louis Kahn rapidly explores plan relationships and classroom arrangements for the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
The sheet reads like an architect’s thought process—blocky rectangles and diagonal hatchings sit beside small, tentative marks and smudged erasures, giving a sense of modular bays, circulation and quick repositioning of spaces.
These working sketches reveal Kahn’s iterative hand-drawing method that helped produce the measured, monumental yet human-scale plans which reshaped modern institutional architecture in the mid-20th century.
