Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, Elevation sketch of House
Louis I. Kahn
American, born Estonia. 1901–1974
1963
A charcoal on tracing paper elevation in which Louis Kahn tests the façadal composition of a house for the Indian Institute of Management, using quick, tactile marks to work out massing, openings, and human scale.
You notice first the spare, gestural charcoal—smudged vertical bays, a prominent central projection and a tiny, sketched figure—that makes monumental blocks feel palpable and human-sized at once.
The sketch reveals Kahn’s working method of hand-drawn studies that translated modernist geometry into a robust, material architecture and helped shape a distinctive, regionally responsive modernism in postcolonial India.
