Report Defects
Thomas Eckersley
British, 1914–1997
c. 1945
A lithograph safety poster by Thomas Eckersley that uses simplified, machine‑like silhouettes and bold lettering to urge people to report faults and prevent accidents.
You first register two towering, blocky black forms against a green‑blue ground, overlaid by a diagonal lattice so that a white, cracklike mark on one shape reads as a glaring flaw while the large words “REPORT DEFECTS” anchor the image.
A clear example of mid‑20th‑century public‑safety design that translated modernist abstraction into urgent, easily read civic messaging, helping standardize visual strategies for communicating industrial risk.
