Cross-Legged Female Nude (Weiblicher Akt im Schneidersitz)
Moissey Kogan
Russian, 1879–1945?
(c. 1927-28)
A linoleum cut by Moissey Kogan showing a seated, cross‑legged female nude, made to simplify the human body into a bold silhouette punctuated by crisp, carved lines.
You immediately notice the heavy, flat black of the figure framed by a thin border, while delicate white incisions mark breasts, fingers and the tilted head, giving the pose a calm, almost sculptural stillness.
This late‑1920s print embodies modernist reduction—using a folk‑print technique to strip the figure to essential planes and negative space, linking classical nudity with a new, pared‑down visual language.
