Thanks to the Underground (Poster for London Transport)
Zero (Hans Schleger)
British, 1898–1976
1935
A 1935 lithograph poster by Hans Schleger (Zero) that thanks and promotes the London Underground by depicting a stylish passenger with the transport system’s red-and-blue roundel as a visual emblem.
A bold, shadowy female profile in hat and fur fills the page—its textured black-and-green mass set against a soft gray ground while the bright red-and-blue Underground roundel at her collar and the stenciled words ‘THANKS TO THE’ and ‘UNDERGROUND’ punctuate the composition.
A compact example of modernist poster design that uses economy of form, dramatic silhouette, and vivid branding to shape public perceptions of urban transit and influence twentieth-century graphic design.
